The Whittier Public Library is working with The Science Circus Whittier Project-Whittier College who works with families and schools to spark student interest and engagement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) by providing access to high-quality learning opportunities in Whittier and surrounding communities.

Please visit Science Circus for great STEM books, activities and projects.

Book of the Week

Picture books are a great way to introduce STEM-related topics. Click here to see the featured book of the week and the activities related to the book title. New books are added each week. The Library has a copy of the physical book to check out at the Central-Whittier Depot and Whittwood Branch, as well as an electronic copy.

Activity Kits

Science Circus Activity Kits are designed to take hands-on activities on the go! Whether at an after-school program or at home, these kits include directions, prompts and materials lists for a variety of engaging activities. Currently, Whittier College students plan and implement these kits with two after-school programs. Each month, one kit is made available for pick-up through the Whittier Public Library.  Please check the Library's social media accounts for the week that the kits will be available for distribution.

At-Home Engineering Challenges

Once a month a new challenge is released. For each challenge, they have created versions for use with students in lower elementary (grades K-2), upper elementary (grades 3-5), and middle school (grades 6-8). They have Spanish language translations for all challenges.

A special thank you to the Science Circus Whittier Project -Whittier College staff for providing the Activity Bags and for their work and dedication in promoting STEM to the families and children of Whittier.
